Suckered by Shady SEO Schemes?

Face it, over the course of the past few years, the Search Engine Optimization Industry has received some pretty bad press, its overall reputation tarnished by a handful of black-hat optimizers selling Shady SEO Schemes and blaming Google for moving the goal-posts when their clients' websites invariably get penalized.

They get to work by 'enhancing' Bill's website with hidden text, which flagrantly breaks Google's Quality Guidelines, but is not yet [emphasis on yet] detectable by the search engine's algorithms.

For a few months, Bill's search rankings sky-rocket, then his site disappears...

...because Google has just noticed that Bill's website contains text content which is not actually visible to its visitors, a technique it considers to be blatant manipulation of its search-rankings. Consequently, Bill's website has just been excluded from Google's search results altogether.

Noticing a huge drop in orders, Bill checks his search rankings, finds that he's nowhere in sight, decides to call Shady SEO to see what's wrong, and is promptly told (you guessed it):
"Yes sir. It's not our fault. It's because Google keeps moving the goal posts now and again. What you need now, is a cookie-cutter directory to regain those lost rankings. That'll be $3,000 please."
Since Bill doesn't know the first thing about SEO, he accepts Shady's advice without question and pays up. For a few months, Bill's search rankings sky-rocket, then his site disappears...
