SEO with a Cookie Cutter

A Shady SEO with a Cookie-Cutter isn't baking gingerbread men. You can be sure he's trying to get your hard-earned cash.

The term Cookie-Cutter Pages, however, is actually a recognized expression within the SEO industry, which refers to any set of web pages full of absolutely identical, generic content, with the small exception that target keywords are inserted in strategic places.

Why call them Cookie Cutter Pages?

Well... First of all click here to see an example of what I mean.

From that example, you should be able to see exactly what I'm talking about. Basically, the term Cookie-Cutter pages stems from the fact that the web designer only needs to produce, and write generic content for one single page. Subsequent pages are identical in every way, except for the blanks into which the target keywords are inserted.

The technique first gained popularity within a certain niche of the Search Engine Optimization industry back in 2002 or thereabouts, and, although advances in Google's algorithms have meanwhile rendered it totally obsolete, yet a few so-called SEO experts still continue to use cookie-cutter pages.

If they're obsolete, why do people continue to use Cookie-Cutter Pages?

This is actually an interesting point, and one which has a couple of answers:

  1. Some so-called SEO experts are what might be called out-of-touch with Google's guidelines.
  2. You are not in fact an SEO expert, and therefore unable to distinguish between solid SEO advice and the spiel of a clever salesman. And once they've convinced you, and charged you all that money for what amounts to a minimal amount of work, you'll find that their contract specifies that they won't give refunds under any circumstances. Find out more about that in my SEO Guide.

In fact, you might be surprised at just how many outdated Black-Hat SEO techniques, such as Cookie-Cutter pages, are still making the rounds, largely because of the many Google Myths which abound throughout the Internet, and because of clients' lack of knowledge.
